Today’s Headlines: Goodluck Finally Speaks On Nigerian Security, Another Protest Begins In Kaduna

Former President Goodluck Jonathan has said Nigeria’s pursuit of peace cannot be achieved in isolation of the pursuit of justice and other human security needs.

Mr Jonathan stated this on Friday in Abuja at the public presentation of a research report entitled ‘Terrorism and Banditry: The Nexus’; conducted by the Goodluck Jonathan Foundation, GJF.

Mr Jonathan, also GJF Chairman, said that the challenges posed by banditry, terrorism and other associated crimes threatened our human essence and the essential values of our democracy and nationhood.

Another Protest Begin In Kaduna

Supporters of the All Progressives Congress on Saturday protested the Kaduna State Electoral Commission’s declaration of the just-concluded council election as inconclusive in the Jema’a Local Government Area of the state.

The protesters including women, nursing mothers as well as youths, who stormed the SIECOM office along the Sokoto Road in the metropolis, gave the the electoral body 24 hours to reversed its decision and declared the APC candidate, Yunana Barde winner of the poll.

The Chairman of the SIECOM, Saratu Dikko-Audu, had on Friday, declared four local government areas in the state where the council poll took place on Saturday 4th, September, 2021, inconclusive.

South-South Govs should embrace VAT collection now -Orbih

The Peoples Democratic Party has called on the South-South Governors to give backing to the recent legal move to reposition the collection of Value Added Taxes to states.

PDP National Vice Chairman, South South, Chief Dan Orbih, made the call on Saturday in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria, in Benin.

The party said that the recent judicial interpretation to the VAT law, which reposed in the federating states the powers to superintendent over the consumption tax showed that the judiciary was alive to its responsibilities.

Police Arrest Five Suspects Who Beheaded S3x Worker In Kwara

Operatives of the Kwara State Police Command have arrested five suspected ritual killers for the murder of a commercial s3x worker identified as Abigail in the Patigi Local Government Area of the state.

The suspects – Peter Tsado, Mohammed Gbara aka Madi, Abubakar Mohammed aka Mallam Baba Pati, Mohammed Ahmadu Nma and Bala Karin – were apprehended in Patigi as well as Bida and Minna in Niger State, while the other three disappeared into the thin air.

According to Punch, the police said the five suspects allegedly participated in the murder of Abigail who was picked up in a hotel in Patigi on June 29, 2021 but murdered for a ritual.

Rivers Governor Inaugurates Commission For Value-Added Tax Despite Court Ruling

Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers State on Friday inaugurated the state’s Tax Appeal Commission shortly after the Abuja Division of the Court of Appeal ordered maintenance of status quo in the collection of value-added tax by state governments.

The commission inaugurated by Wike is saddled with the responsibility to ensure taxable persons and entities comply with the rules of the newly introduced Rivers VAT law.

Wike had on August 19 signed the VAT Bill into Law following the judgment of the Port Harcourt Division of the Federal High Court on the illegality of VAT collection by the federal government via the Federal Inland Revenue Service, FIRS.
